COQUITO’S BACKSTORY: A TASTE OF THE PUERTO RICAN TRADITION
Coquito, a beloved Puerto Rican holiday drink, is more than just a festive beverage – it’s a sip of cultural richness. Rooted in the island’s heritage, this creamy concoction has been passed down through generations, gracing tables during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s celebrations.
The name “Coquito” translates to “little coconut,” and rightly so. At its heart, this drink features the tropical goodness of coconut cream, mingling with the sweetness of condensed and evaporated milk. A splash of Puerto Rican rum gives it a spirited kick, making it a true party essential.
So instead of holding a regular drink, I’ve turned Coquito into a shot. Just to make it fun and exciting if you have drinking games with your family and friends.
Alright, are you ready to get tipsy TOOTz?
THE BREAKDOWN
- CREAM OF COCONUT – this will give the coconut tropical flavor and the key element.
- SWEETENED CONDENSE MILK – for the sweetness and creaminess.
- PUERTO RICAN RUM – or any kind of rum will do.
- VANILLA EXTRACT – add more sweet flavor into the mix
- CINNAMON, NUTMEG, AND CLOVES – the spice trio!
HOW TO MAKE COQUITO SHOTS
In a blender, combine cream of coconut, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, rum, and vanilla extract. Blend until smooth.
Add ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Blend again to mix the spices.
Transfer to a shaker with the lid on. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours.
Shake before pouring into the shot glasses. (Don’t forget about this step!)
Serve the shots cold. Garnish with a cinnamon stick or coconut flakes to be festive!
